In conclusion, if you're just a little bit tech-savvy, and would like to store sensitive data in a public cloud I would recommend giving Cryptomator a shot. As I mentioned previously, please remember they are using cryptographic functions that are not yet standards, and have therefore not been completely vetted by the security community. However, since my files don't contain classified information I am confident this implementation will cause any hacker who may stumble across them to look for another nut to crack. EASY-TO-USE Cryptomator is a simple tool for digital self-defense. Thus far, I've installed the Cryptomator on a couple of Macs, a PC, and my iPhone. All files seamlessly replicate with my OneDrive and the encrypted vault data is not the least bit decipherable without unlocking your vault. ![]() password) so make sure you generate a good one. If you have a favorite password manager, I suggest you jack it up to its maximum and use that as your vault password. Cryptomator is a multi-platform transparent client-side encryption of your files in the cloud that protects your documents from an unauthorized access. ![]() Initially, I was a bit concerned with the Cryptomator setup which consists of a "vault" that contains your encrypted information. I don't want to go into too many details here (the security architecture page provides a treasure trove of implementation details), but again, the implementation contains information on disk with critical algorithm inputs that are unencrypted. This time, however, there just doesn't appear to be another way to do it, without the use of public key infrastructure. The entire implementation is dependent on the security of a key (i.e. Cryptomator is free and open source software, so you can rest assured there are no backdoors and is a very popular Cloud Storage service in the security & privacy category. A few months ago I wrote a quick article on the Boxcryptor cloud encryption software. Although the application was easy to use and provided cross-platform capability some of the implementation choices didn't sit well with me, so I continued my quest for a file encryption provider for my cloud-based records.Įnter Cryptomator, an open-source, cross-platform encryption platform that allows you to encrypt/decrypt your cloud-based bits and bytes on the fly. The Cryptomator security architecture can be read here and is chalked full of encryption goodness. I will caution you, however as there are portions of their implementation that are not yet standards notably the use of RFC-3394 and RFC-5297. Although these RFCs are not formal IETF standards (yet), they extend existing, well-understood standards such as AES. Furthermore, the use of WebDav is a bit concerning. However, after a quick email conversation with a developer the WebDav interface is isolated to your local network. Since the purpose of this tool is to protect files in the cloud, the WebDav implementation is not a factor. Nevertheless, the team at Cryptomator recognizes this weakness and is working on a replacement. Cryptomator is described as provides transparent, client-side encryption for your cloud.Protect your documents from unauthorized access.
